Asthma and Allergy Awareness
What is Asthma? inhaler
Asthma is a disease of the lungs in which the airways become narrowed or blocked causing difficulty with breathing. Asthma symptoms may include coughing, wheezing or shortness of breath. Certain conditions or exposures can trigger asthma symptoms including cold weather, poor air quality, exercise or allergens. This chronic disease affects 20 million Americans.
What is Allergy? tissue
An Allergy is a condition of the immune system in which an exposure to an allergen causes allergy symptoms. Outdoor allergens include pollens and mold spores. Indoor allergens include dust mites, animal dander, and cockroaches. Other allergens may include certain foods, medications or chemicals. Allergy symptoms may include itchy, watery eyes, sneezing or skin rashes.

What Can Be Done About Asthma?
There is no cure for asthma but there are ways to reduce the risk of an asthma attack.
  • Take asthma medication as prescribed.
  • Identify asthma triggers such as: dust, pets, cigarette smoke, or exercise.
  • Recognize the early signs of an asthma attack.
  • Know what to do during an asthma attack — plan ahead.

Everyday in America:
  • 40,000 people miss school or work;
  • 30,000 people have an asthma attack;
  • 5,000 people visit the emergency room;
  • 1,000 people are admitted to the hospital;
  • 11 people die.
What Can Be Done About Allergies?
There are simple things you can do to
reduce allergies:
  • Dust and vacuum your home or office often to control dust mites;
  • Avoid pets with feathers or fur like birds, dogs, and cats;
  • Wash hands after working or playing outside;
  • Stay inside during peak pollen times, usually between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm;
  • Keep car windows closed when traveling.
