Program Description

The Chest Clinic provides services for the detection, prevention, education and treatment of TB, specifically, skin testing, chest X-rays, preventive treatment, and diagnosis of active TB disease. The clinic also operates a Directly Observed Therapy outreach unit which monitors and ensures patient compliance with the prescribed treatment plan.

Highlighting the Local TB Information for 2007 from the Fresno County TB Controller

  • Preliminary figures indicate that 44 cases of tuberculosis disease were recognized in Fresno County during 2007. This represents 4.8 cases per 100,000 people, and continues the downward trend since a 2003 peak incidence (See Figure 1). In 2006 TB affected 4.6/100,000 people in the US, 7.4/100,000 in California, and 6.9/100,000 in Fresno County. The current public health goal for reducing TB disease (Healthy People 2010) is 1/100,000.
  • Referral for TB disease in Fresno County came from hospitals (20), private medical providers (12 ), Department of Community Health contact investigations (3), immigration B Notifications (2), school screenings (3), Department of Community Health targeted testing (2), county jail diagnosis (1), and self referral after listening to a radio program (1) (see Figure 4).

Our Mission
  1. To eliminate TB by initiating prompt treatment and ensuring completion of effective therapy to cure disease.
  2. To reduce further transmission through timely case finding and contact follow-up. To prevent the development of drug-resistance TB.
Our Goals

The goal of the Fresno County Human Services System (FCHSS) and the Community Health Department (CHD) is to eliminate Tuberculosis (TB) among the residents of Fresno County. To achieve this goal, the following objectives have been adopted:

  1. Provide consultation and oversight for the TB control activities of local facilities and practitioners, and insure that these efforts reflect current standards of care and public health practice.
  2. Conduct disease surveillance and investigate exposure case contact to prevent the spread of disease.
  3. Provide direct observed therapy (DOT) and other adherence promoting methods to ensure all patients with TB disease complete therapy.
  4. Provide TB patients case management, regardless of the patient's ability to pay, to initiate prompt treatment and ensure completion of effective therapy to cure disease, reduce transmission, and prevent the development of drug-resistant disease.
  5. Serve as and educational resource and consultant for health care providers and community on current TB treatment and control activities.
  6. To provide services to the community in a collaborative effort with private and managed care providers in order to control tuberculosis.
