Institutes of Mental Disease (IMD's) are specialized nursing homes that provide care for the mentally disabled. They provide care for consumer's who are unable to live in a community setting, but do not need treatment at a state hospital. For many years, nursing homes were used to care for the mentally ill. Some of these facilities provided a programming approach to treatment in order to assist their residents in "gaining control" of their lives again. By the late 1980's, these facilities were recognized as Institutes of Mental Disease. The California Department of Health Services and the California Department of Mental Health license these facilities every year.
